Vernese Hinds May 1, 2020

Vernese Evangeline Hinds “Ma”

92 yrs, 4mths, 22 days, of Rock Hall, St. Thomas entered into rest on May 1, 2020.

With long life will I satisfy him and shew him my salvation. (Psalm 91 v16)

Our mother was a deep thinker, a very private person, unpretentious, straightforward, confidential and not one to follow the crowd. She was devoted to her family and raised her grandchildren until they migrated to their parents. Ma liked to travel and preferred the serenity of Canada when she felt the need for a holiday.

Our ma was fiercely independent and took great pride in her ability to manage her affairs. When our father died leaving four of us still in school Ma carried out her responsibilities as a single mother commendably. She understood what was important—a roof over our heads and high-quality healthcare; no dental appointment could be missed. She believed in a sound education, proper discipline and the fear of the Lord. In our house reading was a must and each child had to join the library. She held firm to the adage “spare the rod and spoil the child”. The singing of hymns was common in our home. We learnt many vital lessons from Ma’s regular use of Bajan proverbs and by her life she demonstrated to us the true meaning of ‘cutting and contriving’ and ‘saving for a rainy day’.

She was a skilled baker and fed many with turnovers, cassava pone, light-sweet bread, fish cakes and muffins.  She mastered the making of confectionery and produced the best sugar cakes and tamarind glassy. Our cupboard was the opposite of Old Mother Hubbard’s for Ma shopped wholesale and while we were sleeping she was cooking.  Ma had a green thumb; she would break off a piece of a plant, stick it in the ground and it would grow.

Ma was a longstanding member of St. Thomas Parish Church where her voice could be heard saying amen, glory and hallelujah. She was not just a hearer of the Word but a doer of the Word.  Visiting and praying for the sick at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and district hospitals were among her regular activities. She assisted others in whatever way she could.  During her years as a Janitor at the St. Thomas Primary School, Ma nurtured many children.  She knew each child personally and readily gave them guidance, especially in matters pertaining to their nutrition.

Today is MOTHERS’ DAY, and we write, but no single page would ever be able to capture the essence of such an extraordinary woman, OUR MOTHER, VERNESE EVANGELINE HINDS.  Ma, we will miss our moments with you; the daily trips to the Jorris Dunner Senior Citizens Centre and your watching your default channels: National Geographic and the Food Network.

Ma, your purpose is fulfilled and your duty is done.  Thanks be to God.  Travel on, Ma!  God has granted you four generations and in each of us YOU WILL LIVE ON.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him … Wherefore comfort one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:14-18)
